The court recognized the crimes of the Wehrmacht in the Belgorod region as genocide

The Belgorod Regional Court satisfied the application of the prosecutor’s office to recognize the crimes committed by the troops of Nazi Germany in the region from July 1941 to August 1943 as war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide of the peoples of the USSR. About it reported in the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation.
The court found that during this period the Nazi invaders formed punitive battalions in the Belgorod region, which massacred Soviet citizens and prisoners of war, carried out illegal arrests, and used cruel torture and torture.
“In total, during the period of temporary occupation of the Belgorod region, more than 71.7 thousand people were exterminated by the Nazi invaders and their accomplices. The stated facts are confirmed by the testimonies of numerous eyewitnesses about the extermination of Soviet civilians on the territory of the Belgorod region and archival data, ”the official website of the supervisory agency says.
The application in this case was sent to the court on behalf of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Igor Krasnov. The decision of the court will not entail practical consequences (for example, the recovery of reparations).
Earlier identical decision on a similar lawsuit (on the recognition of Nazi crimes as genocide) accepted Stavropol Regional Court. Prior to this, the City Court of St. Petersburg acknowledged genocide blockade of Leningrad.
