The court postponed the issue of the liquidation of Sokhnut until September 19

The trial on the liquidation of the Jewish agency Sokhnut in Russia has been postponed for a month. According to a Kommersant correspondent from the courtroom, the representative of the organization at the trial asked for a “two-month conciliation procedure,” but the Ministry of Justice objected and the court refused to appoint such a procedure. The postponement for a month is associated with the second petition of the “Sohnut”, which was filed “in order to form a position on new written evidence and try to eliminate the identified violations.”

“We are studying new documents attached to the case. We hope that the organization will continue to work in Russia,” Sokhnut lawyer Andrey Grishaev said in front of the Basmanny Court.

The Ministry of Justice asked that the Jewish Agency Sokhnut be liquidated in July, and on July 27 the case began to be considered in the Basmanny Court. The Ministry of Justice insists that Sokhnut violated Russian law while working. According to the Jerusalem Post, the claims of the Russian authorities are related to the “collection and transfer of personal data of Russians to Israel and the brain drain.” The Prime Minister of Israel said that the closure of the organization’s offices would affect relations with Russia.

Sokhnut assists in the repatriation of Jews to Israel around the world. In Russia, the organization has offices in nine cities. Earlier, the BBC, citing these organizations, reported that after the start of the military operation in Ukraine, more than 20,000 Jews emigrated from Russia to Israel. In total, according to Sokhnut, up to February 24, 165,000 Jews lived in Russia. In 2021, 20,000 Russian Jews emigrated from Russia.
