The Court of Appeal upheld the liquidation of the Moscow Helsinki Group

The First Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction recognized the liquidation of the Moscow Helsinki Group (MHG) as legal. Earlier, the decision to liquidate the oldest Russian human rights organization was made by the Moscow City Court at the suit of the Moscow Department of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation.
“The decision of the Moscow City Court on the liquidation of the Regional Public Organization “Moscow Group for Assistance to the Implementation of the Helsinki Accords” was left unchanged, the appeal was not satisfied,” the statement says. Telegram channel Moscow courts of general jurisdiction.
Now the decision to liquidate the MHG, adopted by the Moscow City Court on January 25, has entered into force, the human rights organization must immediately stop its activities. The MHG itself has not yet commented on the court’s decision.
The Moscow Helsinki Group is the oldest human rights NGO in Russia, founded in 1976. In 1996-2018, the MHG was headed by well-known human rights activist Lyudmila Alekseeva.
Metropolitan Department of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation considered the work of the Moscow organization outside the region is a violation of the law. Among 11 such episodes, in particular, is an online lecture by the MHG for human rights activists in the Krasnodar Territory. The MHG organized this lecture as part of the implementation of a presidential grant and even received gratitude from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
February 7 Roskomnadzor accepted decision to block access to the MHG website. The agency reported that it had found materials on the portal that “contained unreliable socially significant information, as well as discrediting the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.”
