The Yaroslavl regional court rejected the claim of Alexander Simon, a resident of the city, who demanded that the words “mayor”, “mayor’s office” and “municipality” be recognized as contrary to the law on the state language. This was reported to Kommersant by court spokeswoman Olga Kozlova. Mr. Simon demanded to exclude these names from the regional law on local governments.
The plaintiff appealed to the amendments to the law on the state language adopted in February, which limit the use of foreign words in official address.
“By the decision of the Yaroslavl Regional Court of April 20, 2023, the administrative claims of Alexander Simon against the Yaroslavl Regional Duma, the municipality of Yaroslavl, the Mayor’s Office of Yaroslavl were denied,” the Yaroslavl Regional Court reported. They could not explain the reason for the rejection of the claim, since the decision in full has not yet been made. It has not entered into force and can be appealed.
The plaintiff proposed to replace the terms of foreign origin with pre-revolutionary ones (“mayor”, “uprava”, “city duma”). The former deputy of the municipality of Yaroslavl, Alexander Simon, has been fighting for several years to rename the city representative body, he created the public organization Yaroslavl City Duma.
