Gagarinsky Court of Moscow in absentia arrested professor at the University of Chicago and former vice-rector of the Higher School of Economics (HSE) Konstantin Sonin (declared a foreign agent), reports TASS. The Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) accuses the economist of disseminating false information about the armed forces of the Russian Federation – Part 2 of Art. 207.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. This part carries a penalty of up to ten years in prison.

TFR excited a criminal case for discrediting the army against the ex-vice rector of the Higher School of Economics in March 2023. According to investigators, from April to July 2022, he posted posts on Telegram with “fakes about the Russian military during a special operation.” The expert opinion allegedly testifies that the economist’s publications contain “linguistic and psychological signs of inciting hatred and enmity” towards the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. In May of the same year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced he is wanted.

Konstantin Sonin (declared a foreign agent) was vice-rector of the Russian School of Economics from 2011 to August 2013. He served as Vice-Rector of HSE from August 2013 to December 2014. Since 2015, he has been affiliated with the School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago. Until 2022, he also taught at the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the Higher School of Economics. After the start of the military operation, he left Russia and lives in Chicago.

*Konstantin Sonin was recognized as a foreign agent by decision of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation.
