The Verkh-Isetsky District Court of Yekaterinburg considered the appeal of the defense and issued a verdict of not guilty in the case of Alexander Vasiliev, a former security guard at the Yeltsin Center, who painted eyes on the painting “Three Figures” by Kazimir Malevich’s student Anna Leporskaya, worth 75 million rubles. This was told to Kommersant by lawyer Alexei Bushmakov. Formerly a security guard sentenced to 180 hours of compulsory work and compulsory treatment by a psychiatrist for vandalism (part 1 of article 214 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
The lawyer explained that the Court of Appeal did not see the corpus delicti in the actions of Alexander Vasilyev, and also considered that the painting did not suffer significant damage. This was confirmed by an expert invited by the court. Representatives of the Tretyakov Gallery, which owns the painting, were not at the meeting, but earlier they directed objection to the appeal, because they considered the original verdict fair.
The press service of the prosecutor’s office of the Sverdlovsk region reported that the department will examine the acquittal to see if there are grounds for appealing it.
The incident with drawing eyes to Anna Leporskaya’s painting occurred on December 7 last year during the exhibition “The World as Non-Objectivity” at the Yeltsin Center in Yekaterinburg. The damage to the painting was estimated at 250 thousand rubles, the work was quickly restored. The governor of the Sverdlovsk region, Yevgeny Kuyvashev, later stated that “Vasiliev did nothing for which he should be severely punished,” and the painting by the student of the Suprematist artist would only rise in price after the incident.
