The Council of the State Duma issued a statement on the threats in connection with the shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant

The Council of the State Duma published statement about the situation with the Zaporozhye NPP. The deputies declared the readiness of the Russian side to do everything necessary to organize an international IAEA mission to the ZNPP. They accused Ukraine of regular shelling of the power plant, which could lead to a nuclear catastrophe. In this regard, the State Duma demands to urgently stop the supply of arms to Ukraine.

The deputies also called on the UN, the IAEA and national parliaments to “make a fundamental assessment” of Kyiv’s actions and demand that Ukraine stop shelling objects, the destruction of which “carries the danger of radioactive, chemical and biological contamination and a man-made disaster.”

The deputies also said that “Ukrainian saboteurs” undermine power lines leading to the Kursk nuclear power plant. August 16 at the FSB reportedthat Ukrainian sabotage groups blew up six towers of high-voltage power lines through which the Kursk NPP supplies electricity. In this regard, at the station “there was a decrease in the total capacity due to a malfunction at the substation.”

A delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is planning to come to the Zaporizhzhya NPP to assess its safety in connection with the ongoing shelling of the plant. August 4 at the Russian Foreign Ministry declaredthat the visit of the IAEA mission to the Zaporozhye NPP was not approved by the UN. On August 15, the UN offered to deliver an IAEA delegation, accompanied by the Ukrainian side.

Since the beginning of August, the pro-Russian authorities of Energodar and the Zaporozhye region have been accusing the armed forces of Ukraine of shelling the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. The Ukrainian authorities claim that the station is shelled by the Russian side. On August 25, the pro-Russian administration of the Zaporozhye region reported that the city of Energodar, where the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is located, was de-energized due to shelling. Later pro-Russian authorities declaredthat because of the fire at the nuclear power plant, “safety systems” worked.
