The issue of lifting the moratorium on the death penalty in the context of the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall may become the subject of consideration by the Constitutional Court of Russia. Previously, State Duma deputy Mikhail Sheremet reported about the intention to send a request to lift the moratorium to the Constitutional Court.

The Constitutional Court explained to the agency that since this issue can be considered by the court, the court now “refrains from commenting” on this topic.

Calls to allow the death penalty in Russia began after the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall. The leader of the United Russia faction, Vladimir Vasiliev, said that the return of such punishment “will meet the moods and expectations” of society. The return of the death penalty was also supported by the head of A Just Russia – For Truth, Sergei Mironov, and the head of the LDPR, Leonid Slutsky. Speaker of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin saidthat to lift the moratorium there is no need to hold a referendum, since a decision of the Constitutional Court is sufficient for this.
