The commander of the 58th Army of the Southern Military District (SMD), Major General Ivan Popov, with the call sign “Spartak”, said that he was suspended from service after his report on problems in the army. His appeal was published by State Duma deputy and ex-deputy commander of the Southern Military District Andrey Gurulev in his Telegram channel.
In his address, Ivan Popov addresses his subordinates and says that he reported to the military leadership about the main problems in the Russian army “in combat work, in support.”
“He called all things by their proper names, drew attention to the most important tragedy of modern warfare – this is the absence of counter-battery combat, the absence of an artillery reconnaissance station and the mass death and injury of our brothers from enemy artillery. He also raised a number of other problems, spoke about this at the highest level, frankly, extremely harshly,” Mr. Popov said.
According to Ivan Popov, after the report, “senior commanders in one light day” drew up an order to remove him from service on behalf of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. According to him, now the 58th Army of the Southern Military District is controlled by Lieutenant General Denis Lyamin.
“I am waiting for my future military fate, its changes, receiving some proposal for further service,” Mr. Popov added.
On the eve of the removal of Ivan Popov, the Telegram channel Gray Zone announced. The project claims that Mr. Popov made a report to the Chief of the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov, after which he was removed from service.
