The climate in Russia is warming 2.5 times faster than in the rest of the planet

The head of Roshydromet, Igor Shumakov, said that climate warming in Russia is 2.5 times faster than the average on Earth. Director of the Main Geophysical Observatory. Voeikov Vladimir Kattsov explained that this is due to the fact that most of Russia is located in high latitudes.
“The territory of Russia is warming 2.5 times faster than the planet as a whole. And every decade is warmer than the previous one. The temperature of the northern polar region of our country has been growing most rapidly, especially in recent decades. The area of sea ice in the Arctic is shrinking, permafrost is degrading, which occupies two-thirds of the territory of our country,” Igor Shumakov told reporters, presenting the Third Assessment Report on climate change and its consequences on the territory of the Russian Federation (quoted from Interfax).
Mr. Shumakov added that in 2018-2020, the heat content of the ocean was higher than before, the rate of ocean warming has shown a significant increase over the past 20 years. He noted that the annual average global surface temperature in 2022-2026 is projected to be 1.1-1.7° above pre-industrial levels in the 1850s-1900s.
“Perfectly understandable physics is behind this: this is both the fact that a significant part of the territory of our country is located in high latitudes, and the fact that we are talking about land, which is warming faster than the ocean,” explained the director of the Main Geophysical Observatory. Voeikov Vladimir Kattsov.
