The St. Petersburg City Court announced the decision on the suit of the prosecutor’s office, which asked to recognize the blockade of Leningrad as a war crime, a crime against humanity and genocide of the peoples of the USSR. The judge fully satisfied the requirements of the department, a Kommersant correspondent reports from the courtroom.

During the meetings, the participants listened to expert historians, heads of museums and residents of besieged Leningrad. The assessment was given to the actions of foreign armed formations from European countries – Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and others. Besides, participation in crimes of volunteers from France, Poland, Latvia was noted.

The court gave new official introductions to the blockade. For example, the death toll from starvation, shelling and so-called delayed effects (mostly disease) has risen to 1.093 million. Previously, 649,000 people were officially listed as dead. The prosecutor’s office estimated the material damage at 35.3 trillion rubles. It also included the so-called cultural genocide: the destruction of monuments, the removal of relics.

The established “fact of legal significance”, as expected, will not entail practical consequences. Russia has not yet planned to present claims to Germany and other countries on this basis.
