The Supreme Lama of Kalmykia Telo Tulku Rinpoche (Erdni Ombadykov) transferred all his powers after being recognized as a foreign agent. The text of his statement is published on the website of the Central Khurul of Kalmykia.
According to Ombadykov, he served “the Kalmyk people and Buddhists throughout Russia.” The former supreme lama also wished the people of Kalmykia and all followers of Buddhism “courage, steadfastness and adherence to the ideals of compassion, love and non-violence.”
He transferred his powers to the abbot of the Kalmyk central Buddhist monastery “Geden Sheddup Choi Korling” Geshe Tendzin Choidak (Mutul Ovyanov) and the administrator of the Gelong Yonten Lodoy (Sergey Kirishov).
Telo Tulku Rinpoche has been the Supreme Lama of Kalmykia since the early 1990s, as well as the official representative of the XIV Dalai Lama, the leader of Tibetan Buddhism, in Russia, Mongolia and the CIS. In October 2022, he criticized the special operation in Ukraine. This was the first public criticism of a military operation from a Russian religious leader.
In October, the lama said that he had left Russia and was living in Mongolia, where he held meetings with Kalmyks and other Russian Buddhists who had left the mobilization. Lama was born into a diaspora Kalmyk family in the United States. Most of his life he lived in Kalmykia. He received US citizenship only in 2022.
