Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission Nikolai Bulaev told TASS that the Central Election Commission received letters from supporters of former presidential candidate Boris Nadezhdin (Civil Initiative). According to him, the authors of the letters asked to withdraw the signatures left in support of Mr. Nadezhdin’s nomination.
“The Central Election Commission also received a fairly large number of letters in support of our decision (to deny Nadezhdin registration for the elections.— ”b”), among them were (letters from voters.— ”b”), who demanded to withdraw their signatures from the signature sheets,” said Nikolai Bulaev. He noted that the letters also included statements about “reluctance to see such a candidate.”
According to Mr. Bulaev, the decision of the Supreme Court (SC) on Boris Nadezhdin’s claim was logical, since the politician was unable to present substantiated arguments. On February 21, the Supreme Court recognized as legal the decision of the Central Election Commission to refuse to register Boris Nadezhdin as a presidential candidate. The court rejected the politician’s third claim. Mr. Nadezhdin said that he would appeal the decision of the Supreme Court. The court will consider complaints regarding his two previous claims on February 26.
The CEC refused to register Mr. Nadezhdin on February 8. Based on the results of checking 105 thousand signatures that the politician submitted to the Central Election Commission, the Central Election Commission commission considered 9,147 signatures invalid and 95,587 signatures valid.
