Law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the damage to the undersea fiber optic cable off the Kuril Islands in the Sakhalin region, which led to the loss of communications for residents of Kunashir and Shikotan. This was reported by Alexander Snegirev, Minister of Digital and Technological Development of the Sakhalin Region, TASS.
“An investigation is currently underway to identify those responsible from the point of view of law enforcement agencies,” the agency source said. He also recalled that at an emergency meeting, a set of priority measures was developed aimed at minimizing the negative consequences of cable damage for residents of the Kuril Islands. Telecom operators are actively working to organize satellite communication channels in order to partially restore Internet access and voice services.
