The cause of death of the world-famous chef has been revealed: “the owner of the eggs of Sydney”

Bill Granger was called the “King of Breakfast” and the inventor of avocado toast.

World-renowned chef Bill Granger has died at the age of 54 after a long illness. The self-taught Australian restaurateur died on Christmas Day, December 25th. Hollywood stars and the culinary world are mourning the passing of the “godfather of avocado toast.”

Hollywood stars from Hugh Jackman to Gwyneth Paltrow joined leading figures from the culinary world including Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver to pay tribute to Granger. He is known to have been battling cancer for several months.

The Melbourne-born chef, who has spent 30 years in gastronomy, opened his first restaurant in Sydney in 1993. Granger & Co’s first London location in Notting Hill in 2011.

Granger has also owned restaurants in Seoul and Tokyo, written 14 cookbooks, hosted a number of cooking shows and appeared as a guest judge on MasterChef Australia.

Grainger left art school at the age of 21 to open his first restaurant in Sydney’s Darlinghurst in 1992.

The chef is credited with inventing avocado toast, which has become a popular breakfast option around the world. Granger is also believed to be the first person to put a recipe in a cookbook, which he said seemed “stupid” at the time. For decades, his Darlinghurst cafe was also famous for its perfected scrambled eggs.

Grainger first came to international attention in 2002 when the New York Times dubbed him “Sydney’s Egg Master”, calling his restaurant’s scrambled eggs “as light as an angel’s breath”.

The chef’s family said he will be remembered as the “King of Breakfast” for “transforming simple food into something special, full of sunshine.”

Australian Hugh Jackman issued a joint statement with his former partner Deborah-Lee Furness, writing: “We are devastated by the news of Bill’s passing. His talent, his joy for life, the way he brought people together and his dedication to his family were inspiring.”

Jackman’s co-star Gwyneth Paltrow also responded to the sad news: “Oh my God, this is so heartbreaking! Love you all.”

Actor Richard E. Grant shared a series of broken-heart emojis, while Australian singer and actor Jason Donovan called Granger a “ray of Australian sunshine.”

The chef’s family released a statement saying: “It is with great sadness that Bill Granger’s family announces that he passed away on December 25th at the age of 54. A devoted husband and father, Bill passed away peacefully in hospital surrounded by his loved ones: wife Natalie Elliott and three daughters Edie, Inez and Bunny… He will be greatly missed by all and his loss is most deeply felt by his adoring family who are grateful for all the love shown and support.”

Nigella Lawson said she was “heartbroken” in response to the post, while fellow chef Jamie Oliver called the news “heartbreaking”: “This is devastating news. I’m so sad to hear this, what a guy he was… a wonderful person, kind, calm. I admired everything he represented in food. I remember the first time I met him many years ago. He couldn’t have been nicer and his food was so delicious.”

Australian MasterChef host Matt Preston called the chef “a truly lovely guy and an inspiration” and praised his work in shaping “the image of modern Australian cuisine around the world”.
