The government in February 2023 will prepare a federal project to support Russian video game developers, follows from the instructions of Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko following the results of the Innopolis Digital Days 2022 forum, with which got acquainted “Kommersant”.

The Ministry of Digital Development is responsible for preparing the project. The agency must submit proposals within the framework of the Digital Economy national program on support measures for video game developers by February 10, 2023. This includes the development of the domestic industry, export potential, and support for start-ups.

By December 20, the Ministry of Education and Science was instructed to prepare proposals for the formation of new programs for specialized higher and secondary specialized education. Chernyshenko’s representative clarified that no final decision on the creation of a new federal project has been made, so far it has only been instructed to work out additional measures to support the video game industry and eSports.

Sources of the newspaper in Russian game studios said that today, December 14, a meeting on this topic will be held at the Ministry of Digital Development, which will be attended by market players, including 1C and VK. The study of issues of support for the gaming industry was also confirmed by the Ministry of Economy. In the other mentioned departments, Kommersant’s request was not answered. 1C and VK declined to comment.

Against the backdrop of the start of a special operation in Ukraine, the Russian games market also faced problems. So, Steam and PlayStation limited the purchase of licensed games for users from the Russian Federation. Kommersant wrote back in June 2022 that the Russian authorities were preparing a concept to support the gaming industry. Freezing commissions from the sale of games in Russian app stores was discussed as one of the measures.

At the same time, Russian authorities are looking for ways to further regulate video games. So, in December in the Cabinet reported on the development of requirements for mandatory age marking of video games. According to a Kommersant source, Russia wants to launch a labeling system similar to the international PEGI (used since 2003 in 39 countries).
