The deputies of the Bundestag did not support the submission to the vote of the proposal of the CDU / CSU bloc, which provides for the start of deliveries of Leopard tanks to Ukraine, transmits press office of the German Parliament.

“After a heated debate, the Bundestag submitted the proposal to the Foreign Affairs Committee for further discussion. The union called for an immediate vote but failed due to the vote of the coalition factions, the AfD and the left faction.

“Substantial decisions” are expected to hinge on a meeting of the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group on Friday, Jan. 20, at US Air Force Base Ramstein. This meeting will also be attended by the new German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who took the oath before the Bundestag.

Germany previously agreed to the transfer of heavy Marder infantry fighting vehicles almost simultaneously with the US decision to supply Kyiv with 50 M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. Ukraine also received and continues to receive T-72M / M1 / M1R tanks of Czechoslovak and Polish production from the Czech Republic and Poland, M-55S tanks from Slovenia and former own T-72A tanks delivered 20 years ago to Macedonia. The Polish authorities also decided to transfer a company of Leopard tanks to Kyiv as part of an international coalition.

The Russian authorities have repeatedly criticized the supply of Western weapons to Kyiv. In particular, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, has repeatedly pointed out that pumping Ukraine with weapons brings NATO closer to the dangerous line of a direct military clash with Russia.
