People who have a cold or feel unwell should stay at home, and if they had to go outside, they should wear a mask, the UK Health Protection Agency said amid warnings that the health service records many viral diseases in patients, even higher than during the peak of the pandemic.
500 patients die every week from viral illnesses in UK hospitals, with leading doctors telling Britons the situation is “much worse” than during the darkest days of the coronavirus pandemic.
Professor Susan Hopkins, UKHSA chief medical adviser, said adults should “try to stay at home when not feeling well” and those who do have to go out should “wear a mask”.
Sick Britons have also been told not to visit medical facilities “unless absolutely necessary” and to avoid people with ailments.
She also urged parents to teach their children good hand hygiene by practicing regular handwashing at home with soap and warm water.
The latest figures show that by November, only 48 percent of primary school children had received the flu vaccine, despite hospitalization rates due to the virus remaining high.
