At the Johannesburg summit, the BRICS member countries adopted a document that describes the conditions for expanding the group. This was announced by the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Africa Naledi Pandor.
“We have an adopted document that describes the principles for the admission of countries wishing to become members of the BRICS,” Reuters quotes the head of the South African Foreign Ministry. Pandor added that more details will be provided by the leaders of the BRICS countries before the end of the meeting on August 24.
BRICS now consists of five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. According to the representative of South Africa in the BRICS, Anil Suklal, 19 countries want to join the group. In June, an application was submitted from Egypt, in July from Bolivia, and in August from Venezuela.
In addition, Argentina has shown interest in joining the BRICS. Bloomberg reported that the EU urged Argentina not to join the BRICS during the armed conflict in Ukraine.
The agency also argued that India and Brazil are against community expansion. However, at the summit in South Africa, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly supported the initiative to expand the BRICS.
