The Brazilian Navy decided to sink the aircraft carrier “Sao Paulo”

Infoportal Aerotime reports on the heavy thoughts in which the Brazilian Ministry of Defense, with Minister Marina Silva at the head, plunged: it is necessary to decide what to do with the old decommissioned aircraft carrier Sao Paulo (NAe São Paulo). It was sold to one of the Turkish shipyards for cutting, but the buyers, having examined the purchase more closely, decided not to drive it into their waters: the ship was very leaky and had hundreds of tons of asbestos and dangerous synthetics on board.

Now, the newspaper Folha de São Paulo hints, the military has prepared to carefully subject the 266-meter ship to a “controlled flood” off the coast of the country and say that the French, before selling them their ship built in the 50s of the 50s, removed all dangerous asbestos, etc. But the minister still thinks what is worse – reproaches for the deliberate destruction of the environment, with which Brazil is already quite good, or a long fuss with a steamer that can sink uncontrollably.

Gazeta.ru, which read the material, found out that the Turkish Ministry of Natural Resources had very good reasons to deploy the Clemenceau-class aircraft carrier, which had already reached Gibraltar. The main danger is about 600 tons of asbestos, from which many of the ship’s partitions are made. The Brazilian military say at the same time that there are not even 10 left. But there are also polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), with a total volume of 165 tons. It is also an effective carcinogen. But that’s not all. While still in the French Navy, the aircraft carrier, then called Foch, took part in French atmospheric nuclear tests in the Pacific in the 1960s. Well, on a trifle: it is assumed that 170 tons of lead-cadmium paint, with which everything is painted there, can retain radioactive contamination.
