The contractor named the actions of rodents as one of the reasons for the dam break in Orsk. Candidate of Biological Sciences Dmitry Fedorov categorically rejected this version in a conversation with RIA Novosti.

The biologist said that if the dam was built in accordance with the design, using dense clay, then rodents simply would not have the opportunity to dig holes in it. In addition, rodents always build their homes near a place where they can get food. And at the dam they simply have nothing to eat.

Dmitry Fedorov also drew attention to the fact that not a single rodent will build housing where it could be flooded at any moment. If it’s not beavers, then they build dams just so that the huts don’t flood.

Thus, statements about the involvement of rodents in the dam break do not stand up to criticism, the biologist concluded.

Earlier, the head of Spetsstroy, the company that was the general contractor for the construction of the dam, Sergei Komarov blamed rodents for the destruction of the hydraulic structure. According to him, “a two- to three-centimeter hole would be enough for water to flow through the dam.”
