A huge number of carcasses were found on the coast of the Caspian Sea
Last week, the information space was stirred up by the news of an environmental disaster in Dagestan: more than two thousand carcasses of dead seals were found on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Scientists who studied the phenomenon came to the conclusion that the causes of the mass death of animals are of a natural nature. And that’s where it all came to a halt.
It is reported that the carcasses of dead seals continue to lie on the shore. Why are they not removed and can this mismanagement cause an epidemic? About this “MK” talked with experts.
According to Zaur Gapizov, General Director of the ANO “Caspian Environmental Center”, at the moment there are more than 2,500 carcasses of dead mammals on the shore, which must be removed and disposed of.
“So far, this work has not been carried out, but I hope that they will be adequately disposed of. In 2020, when there was a similar situation, no one disposed of them, in most cases they were simply buried by local residents. But then it was autumn, the cold season, but in 2021 it was May, there was a fetid story. They were again buried by local residents, municipal employees, and beach tenants on their own. There was no centralized export in both cases.”
“Seals in the Caspian have no natural enemies, except for humans, if no one hunts them, then they die of old age and disease,” Sergey Mukhametov, senior lecturer at the Department of Oceanology, Faculty of Geography, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, told Moskovsky Komsomolets. “Two weeks ago, it became sharply cold in the Northern Caspian, and viral diseases could have worsened.”
Why are animal remains not disposed of?
– They don’t take it away, because it’s expensive, and then after a while the sea of carcasses will still “recycle”, as it processes any organic matter – there are degrader bacteria in the food chains that decompose organic compounds into inorganic ones. As I understand it, these 2,500 seal carcasses are not in one place, but are widely dispersed, so nothing bad will happen.
