The State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill on the formation of peacekeepers from among volunteers
On Tuesday, the State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill specifying that military personnel who are sent to participate in peacekeeping activities are recruited on a voluntary basis with military personnel who have undergone special training.
According to the current legislation, the peacekeeping contingent is formed from military personnel who serve under a contract.
The conclusion of the State Duma Defense Committee states that the adoption of the bill will expand Russia’s ability to attract military personnel sent to participate in peacekeeping activities.
Since November 10, 2020, the Russian Federation has been conducting a peacekeeping operation in Nagorno-Karabakh. 1960 Russian servicemen were sent to the conflict zone. The basis of the peacekeeping contingent is the servicemen of the 15th separate motorized rifle Alexandria brigade. The period of stay of peacekeeping forces in the conflict zone, according to agreements between the Russian, Azerbaijani and Armenian sides, is 5 years with the possibility of automatic extension if there are no objections from any of the parties.
