According to Andrey Lugovoy, Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on Security, a draft law will soon be submitted to parliament, which provides for tougher penalties for high treason.
The parliamentarian is sure that in the current situation, the punishment for such crimes must be toughened up to life imprisonment without the right to appeal. He also believes that persons who have committed treason should be deprived of citizenship.
“We will prepare such a legislative initiative and submit it to the State Duma in the near future … Consultations are already underway. I would like to remind you that in the Soviet period, in our country, for betrayal – I will speak in a language understandable to everyone – execution was supposed. Which was used. But in the 90s years, given the liberal approach in the country as a whole, such a measure began to be considered an anachronism, and they decided to mitigate the punishment,” Lugovoi explained to RIA Novosti.
