In the Czech city of Karvina they refused to rename the avenue, which since the 1970s has been named after Valentina Tereshkova. This decision was made by city council members.
Edition Idnes notes that 33 people’s representatives voted against the renaming. Only six deputies spoke in favor of changing the name.
The mayor of Karvina, Jan Wolf, said that the renaming is currently an unnecessary measure. “We have much more important problems,” he noted.
The mayor’s office estimated that the initiative would cost the city approximately half a million Czech crowns. It will also take a lot of time and effort to complete the necessary official procedures, such as exchanging identity documents.
It is known that Valentina Tereshkova Street no longer exists anywhere in the Czech Republic. The first female astronaut had never been to Karvina. However, there are many other space-related objects around the avenue, such as Gagarin Square.
