Members of the executive committee of the Association of African Olympic Committees (ANOCA) at a meeting in the capital of Mauritania, the city of Nouakchott, unanimously supported the admission of athletes from Russia and Belarus under the neutral flag to international competitions, including the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The statement said that ANOCA President, Algerian Mustafa Berraf, joins in the issue of the admission of athletes to the position of the International Olympic Committee and its head Thomas Bach. “Thus, it is about allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in complete neutrality without any signs of identity in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris,” ANOCA said in a statement (quoted by AFP).
After the start of the special operation in 2022, the IOC recommended that international sports federations prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in competitions. In early 2023, the IOC allowed the return of athletes from these countries to competitions in a “neutral status” – this only applies to those who did not publicly express support for the actions of the Russian authorities during the special operation. This initiative was supported by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). Council President Randhir Singh said that a special system for distributing quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics will be developed for Russian and Belarusian athletes.
Ukraine accused the IOC of bribery from Russia, and also announced a possible boycott of the Olympic Games. Governments of 34 countries sent a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) demanding that athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus not be allowed to the Games in Paris until “fundamental issues” are resolved. The United States, Great Britain, France, Canada and Germany, among others, participated in the drafting of the letter.
The IOC reacted rather sharply to calls from Western countries to abandon the idea of allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. The organization said that the position of governments does not take into account the opinion of the UN on the inadmissibility of discrimination based on nationality.
