The head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, commented on the launch of the Angara-A5 heavy launch vehicle. It will take a lot of work to ensure reliability, he said. It is planned that Angara will be ready to launch a manned spacecraft in 2028.
“It’s been a tough three days because it’s not a TV show or fireworks. It’s routine, hard work. <...> All those technical failures that occurred the day before yesterday and yesterday are normal work for all of us. We still have a lot of work to do with this rocket to ensure its reliability. And in 2028 she will need to launch a manned spacecraft,” Mr. Borisov told reporters (video published in Telegram channel Roscosmos).
The head of Roscosmos noted that this was “only the fourth launch of the heavy Angara in 10 years.” In his opinion, the missile has not yet “attained the required level of readiness.” In addition, launches take place at a new spaceport. “It’s a completely new start—an automatic start,” he explained.
Initially, the launch of Angara-A5 was planned for December 2023, but was postponed to the first quarter of 2024. The launches scheduled for April 9th and 10th were canceled a few minutes before the start. On April 11, the launch was successful. Orion upper stage brought out small satellite “Gagarinets” into low Earth orbit.
Angara-A5 is the first rocket developed and created after the collapse of the USSR. Today’s launch was the fourth in history for a heavy rocket. The last three test launches were carried out from the Plesetsk cosmodrome.
