The damage from the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region could amount to about $14 billion, said Oleksiy Makeev, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany. He stated this in an interview with the Funke media group.

The fish industry will be seriously damaged due to the loss of biological resources, Makeev said. According to him, the death of fish is already observed in the Kherson region. In addition, due to the destruction of the station, more than 20,000 hectares of agricultural land became unexploited “for many years”.

“The granaries are under water. Few vessels in the Black Sea ports that supply grain around the world can be loaded,” – said Ambassador (TASS quote).

The breakthrough of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station occurred on the night of June 6. As a result of the incident, an uncontrolled discharge of water began, the level of which reached more than 11 m. A local emergency regime was introduced on the territory of the district, and an emergency regime was also introduced on the territory of the Kherson region. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the explosion of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station a barbaric act of Kyiv. Ukraine blames Russia for the destruction.

Putin instructed Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to form a government commission to eliminate the consequences of the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. Assessing the consequences of flooding is engaged a special working group, Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin told Vedomosti.

As of the morning of June 10, over 6,000 people were evacuated from the flooded territories of the Novokakhovskoye city, Aleshkinsky and Golopristansky municipal districts, including 235 children and 81 people with limited mobility. The Dnieper River, according to preliminary calculations, will return to its usual course below the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station by June 16, said Acting Governor of the Kherson region Volodymyr Saldo.
