Today, September 7, the administration of St. Petersburg hosted a meeting of the Coordination Council for Veterans Affairs, chaired by the city governor Alexander Beglov. The main topic of discussion was preparations for the 80th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the fascist blockade, which will be celebrated in January 2024. During the meeting, it became known that there would be no parade of military equipment on Palace Square that day.
“At the request of the Ministry of Defense, the organizing committee decided not to hold a military parade on Palace Square on January 27,” the Smolny press service quotes Mr. Beglov. However, according to the mayor, the main square of the city “should not be empty” on such a day. “The Committee on Legality and the Committee on Youth Policy have been instructed to organize an exhibition of military retro equipment on January 27 on Palace Square,” the governor noted.
In general, the plan for the main anniversary celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the lifting of the siege of Leningrad will include 130 events. 23 of them are carried out by the government of St. Petersburg, and federal authorities and institutions are responsible for 42.
Let us note that on September 8, 2023, events dedicated to the 82nd anniversary of the beginning of the blockade will be held in St. Petersburg. In particular, a concert with songs and poems will take place at the Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery. The traditional “Candle of Memory” event will take place on the Arts Square. Various events are also planned at the Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad and at other city venues.
