No longer lighting the monuments at night at certain times, including an energy point in the weather forecast… With the approach of winter, which promises to be high risk both in terms of power cuts and in terms of “social cohesion”, the think tank Terra Nova, a social democratic think tank, invites, in a note published this Tuesday, August 23, to mobilize to stimulate collective sobriety. “To go today five times faster than what we have done in the past, the only immediately accessible and profitable energy savings and small gestures will be good to take, but will not be enough to meet the objective that s the government has set, namely 10% savings within two years”, notes Nicolas Goldberg, energy manager at Terra Nova.
Given the allotted time, which is too short, the first track, which may seem obvious, but which would constitute the “the largest and fastest source of savings” – “of the order of a terawatt hour” – lies in the pure and simple application of the measures already enshrined in the law and which, for the time being, are not being respected. If terrace heating has been prohibited since March 2022, and the law provides for a fine of 1,500 euros in the event of a repeat offense, no verbalization has, for example, to date, been noted, recalls the note.

There are also regulations imposing temperature limits for heating (19°C maximum) and air conditioning (26°C) in premises used as offices or open to the public. In this regard, it should “provide a system for monitoring communities and administrations so that they apply and control the application of these legal provisions and verbalize non-compliance with standards”, continues the author, who proposes to launch an awareness campaign with technical building managers (GTB), individuals and condominiums.

To get as many people on board as possible, these energy experts consider it essential that the State set an example by tackling superfluous consumption. “Asking our fellow citizens to pay attention to their consumption by turning off Wi-Fi or moderating their heating remains contradictory to maintaining large lighting or advertising screens”, he insists, while these questions of sharing are illustrated at the moment by the debate on private jets.
