Cosmonaut, colonel engineer Valentina Ponomareva died on November 8 at the age of 91. She was the second backup for Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to fly into space.

In the 1950s, Valentina Ponomareva mastered flying skills on Po-2, Yak-18, and MiG-15 jet fighters. In 1962, she was appointed a student-cosmonaut of the 2nd detachment of the Cosmonaut Training Center of the USSR Air Force, and later – a cosmonaut of the 1st detachment. In June 1963, she was the second backup for Vostok-6 pilot Valentina Tereshkova.
After the disbandment of the women’s group in 1969, Mrs. Ponomareva was expelled from the detachment. Since 1988, she worked at the Institute of the History of Natural Science and Technology of the USSR Academy of Sciences (RAN). In 2002, her autobiographical book “The Female Face of Space” was published.
