Leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, Mikhail Leus, said that on January 3, the temperature in Moscow dropped to -25.2° for the first time in 74 years. According to him, the last time it was colder was January 3, 1950, when the minimum was -29°.
Mr. Leus noted that the record concerns only the date January 3. “There haven’t been such frosts in the metropolis on this day for 74 years!” he wrote in his Telegram channel.
He also noted that this mark is far from reaching record levels. The last record for sub-zero temperatures on January 3 belongs to 1942, when on that day the temperature in Moscow dropped to -35.9° (according to some sources, to -36.6°).
“The northern capital today is left without a record,” added Mr. Leus. According to him, St. Petersburg lacked one and a half degrees to set the record on January 3, 2022 (-25.4°). Today’s low in the city was -24.0°.
