A Paris juvenile court has sentenced six schoolchildren accused of killing teacher Samuel Paty in October 2020. This was reported by the BFMTV channel, citing a source.
The teenagers were given prison sentences ranging from 14 months suspended to six months of actual imprisonment. One of the defendants, who spied on the teacher and gave the killer information about his location, received 24 months in prison, including 6 real and 18 suspended. The college student who bullied her teacher, aged 13 at the time, was convicted of slander and sentenced to 18 months’ probation.
The court hearings were held behind closed doors due to the fact that the defendants are minors. Only those who were directly related to the case were allowed to participate in them.
Samuel Paty was killed on October 16, 2020 in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine near the school where he taught. The 18-year-old killer, the son of Chechen refugees, tried to threaten police at the crime scene and was shot dead. According to the head of the anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office, Jean-François Ricard, the murder was preceded by a social media campaign launched by the father of one of the students. It was stated that Paty, during a lesson on freedom of speech, showed students caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad from Charlie Hebdo magazine. Later, as a result of the investigation, it was established that the teacher did not show the cartoons.
