The European Union has extended individual sanctions against Russia until March 15, 2024. At the same time, four citizens of the country were excluded from the list – businessmen Grigory Berezkin, Alexander Shulgin and Farhad Akhmedov, as well as Colonel Georgy Shuvaev, who died during the SVO in the fall of 2022. Meanwhile, the famous Russian businessman Petr Aven gave another big interview, where he also developed the topic of sanctions and the prospects for relations between Russia and the West. Kommersant FM political commentator Dmitry Drize believes that domestic business will have to make a difficult choice.

Entrepreneur Petr Aven gave a long interview to the Latvian network resource Baltic News Network, where he spoke in detail about how he loves Latvia, which kindly granted him and his family citizenship. Apparently, the main thesis should be a passage on the topic of joint or joint responsibility.

“I don’t understand what exactly “joint and several (or joint) liability” means. “I, of course, feel responsible for everything that happens in the country of which I am a citizen, where I live and worked for a long time, including in the government,” Aven said.

We are probably talking about Russia. Moreover, as to whether he lives or not, the question is, apparently, controversial. Here another quote comes to mind – from the famous film “Beware of the Car”: “He is, of course, to blame… But he is not to blame!” I don’t know what joint and several responsibility is, but nevertheless I feel some other kind of responsibility—abstract responsibility, and it’s not clear why.

Recently, there has been active discussion in Latvia about whether to deprive Pyotr Olegovich of his citizenship. And he is clearly not happy about this. There were many other speeches literally shouting from him, saying that this simply cannot be done categorically. It is no secret that Russian businessmen are now actively engaged in lifting Western sanctions.

Some people publicly condemn Russia’s actions in Ukraine, others file suits in European courts and even win them. But there is no clear formula or list of actions on how to get out of restrictions.

Even public condemnation of the Russian Federation and the most specific formulations of what joint and several liability is do not provide any guarantees, nor do arguments in the courts. This is understandable – you can be aware of responsibility either sincerely, without asking for anything in return, or not at all. Otherwise, this is not repentance, but, even worse, a cynical calculation. However, we are not here to speculate or give advice.

Just now in Vladivostok, President Vladimir Putin touched upon this topic with a wish of health to the co-founder of Yandex Arkady Volozh, who, as you know, declared himself an Israeli businessman from Kazakhstan who advocates world peace. It is clear that he made his choice. And others are invited to do the same.

The President tells them this: don’t constantly step on the same rake – come back and invest money here in the Russian Federation. Moreover, this has been discussed for a very long time; calls were made before any events that no one could have foreseen then. And they still don’t listen.

Meanwhile, everything is leading to the fact that a choice will still have to be made. It is impossible to sit on two chairs indefinitely. We thought that everything would somehow resolve itself, but it did not. This whole story seems to last for a long time. And then tectonic shifts will follow. Here is the redistribution of property, and the deprivatization already mentioned more than once, and much more that we do not yet see. The old world gradually becomes history, and in its place a new one is born – its contours appear. We should probably stop here, otherwise you never know where you can go.
