It will automatically check students’ homework. It is clarified that the creation of a certain technological solution has already been approved by the government. It will be connected to the digital educational platform “My School”. In this case, institutions will connect to the system voluntarily. The project will probably be implemented on the basis of the Moscow Electronic School. No other details are provided.

How do teachers themselves feel about the initiative of the Ministry of Digital Development? Kommersant FM talked to teachers and found out that not all of them are ready to give up checking homework:

Leonid Katsva, history teacher: “I can’t imagine that this can be done in humanities subjects. A teacher who trusts technology to grade standardized tests will save time. The main thing is not this, but the fact that the test is checked quickly in any case, but written work with an answer to this or that question takes quite a long time. But it cannot be double-checked with a test, that is, in mechanics or automation. This is what a person does.”

Rimma Subeeva, teacher of Russian language and literature: “I’m probably still that Soviet teacher who, starting from the 5th grade, instills graphic designations of spelling patterns and strives for calligraphy, correct literate writing. I’m convinced that it needs to be checked. I’m unlikely to give this up. I have neither weekends nor holidays, notebooks are always waiting for me. Of course, I would be much freer without the daily check. But I understand that it’s impossible without this.”

Alexander Serkin, science teacher: “I have an extremely negative attitude towards this idea. When I assign homework, I do it with a purpose. Assignments are given to review the material studied and so on. Or the purpose of the homework is for me to evaluate the work and give the student feedback. No electronic system can provide complete feedback on the work I asked.”

Alexander Ojo, history teacher: “On the one hand, teachers will have more time to prepare lessons and personal life. On the other hand, manual checking of homework allows you to better monitor your progress, how the student is progressing or, conversely, plus the teacher’s greater involvement in the process.”

The Ministry of Digital Development noted that the authorities plan to introduce a system for automated checking of assignments in the field of general education. This means that this will affect schoolchildren from grades 1 to 11. The development of such a project will require serious funding, believes IT expert Dmitry Bevza:

“I see two options. The first and simplest: you can simply implement a test system. In this case, the student is given homework in the form of a test. This is quite easy to automate, because a test is taken and the result of mastering the material is displayed. From a technical point of view, it is very simple. More challenging options include grading written work, especially handwritten work. But this can also be implemented. You need a powerful text recognition system.

Second option: a system based on artificial intelligence. This is a rather complex process, that is, you need to write some kind of neural network, then train it so that it evaluates the quality of the material. This is a doable task, but not cheap.

How effectively can the system recognize a student’s handwriting? Text recognition systems have been around for many years and are quite advanced. These are all neural networks that are trained on large datasets. There are neural networks that can distinguish even primary documents, that is, certificates and so on, for digitization. It’s more difficult with handwritten text; there are many nuances, for example, children often write better than adults.”

The Ministry of Digital Development also reported that from 2020 to 2022, about 10 thousand schools were connected to Wi-Fi.
