TASS: physicist Sergeev may withdraw his candidacy from the election of the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences

The current president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Alexander Sergeev, who has held this post since 2017, may withdraw his candidacy from the election of the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences on September 19. This was reported by TASS with reference to sources close to Mr. Sergeev.

“Alexander Mikhailovich plans tomorrow during the general meeting dedicated to the election of a new head of the Russian Academy of Sciences, to announce the withdrawal of his candidacy from the vote. It is likely that this will happen in the first half of the day after the report on the activities of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2017–2022,” the agency was told. According to another source, Alexander Sergeev decided to withdraw his candidacy within the last two days.

In July, the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences approved list of candidates for the presidency of the academy. It included: Alexander Sergeev, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Nanotechnology and Information Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov, Scientific Director of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Robert Nigmatulin, and Director of the Institute of Thermal Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Markovich. Kommersant’s interlocutors at the academy considerthat Alexander Sergeev and Gennady Krasnikov have the most chances to win.

From 2015 to 2017, Mr. Sergeev was the director of the Institute of Applied Physics (IPF) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. During his transition to the position of head of the academy in 2017, he asked save his place in the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
