Honored figure skating coach of the USSR Tatyana Tarasova commented on the statements of the head of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov and the president of the All-Russian Federation of Rhythmic Gymnastics (VFKhG) Irina Viner. Previously, they called Russian athletes wishing to participate in the Games in Paris a “team of foreign agents” and a “team of homeless people,” respectively. According to Ms. Tarasova, such statements towards athletes are offensive.
“I think it’s insulting, ugly and unfair that sports leaders called athletes who decided to go to the Olympic Games and who will compete for Russia like that,” she said in a conversation with “Sport Express”.
On March 26, Irina Viner, in a conversation with reporters, called the athletes who decided to go to the Games a “team of homeless people.” According to her, performing in a neutral status (without a flag and anthem) is humiliating. Today, April 5, Stanislav Pozdnyakov joined her statements. He stated that he agreed with Ms. Wiener’s opinion, but proposed his own formulation in relation to tennis players – “a team of foreign agents.” Mr. Pozdnyakov explained this by saying that athletes live and earn money abroad most of the time, “play for themselves,” and condemn Russian policies and the special operation.
