“Talking about important things” at school: what is it and what topics are discussed

What is “Conversations about the important things”
“Conversations about important things” is an extracurricular subject included in the curriculum of all schools and colleges. It is held in a classroom format once a week. Classes are held on Mondays as the first lesson. They can draw a line in front of them, raise the Russian flag and listen to the national anthem.
The appearance of new classes in schools was officially announced on June 20, 2022 at a meeting of the Knowledge Society. The first training manuals on “Talking about Important Things” appeared in August of the same year. The first lesson took place on September 5th. In total, 34 lessons were held over the past academic year.
What they talk about at “Conversations about Important Things”
Each lesson is dedicated to a specific topic. It is common among all classes and schools. However, the information is adapted depending on the age of the students. For example, the same topic will be taught differently to junior and senior students. Methodological guidelines and topics are prepared by the Institute for Educational Development Strategy of the Russian Academy of Education. As a rule, classes are taught by class teachers or school teachers, but outside experts can also be invited to lessons: veterans, doctors, deputies and others.
On September 1, 2022, in Kaliningrad, President Vladimir Putin held an open lesson as part of “Conversations about Important Things” for the winners of Olympiads and competitions in the field of culture, art, science and sports.
The 2023 Conversations that Matter program outlines the goals that the classes will aim to achieve. Among them:
- formation of Russian civic identity of students;
- formation of interest in knowledge;
- developing a conscious attitude towards one’s rights and freedoms and a respectful attitude towards the rights and freedoms of others;
- building one’s own behavior from the standpoint of moral and legal norms;
- creating motivation for participation in socially significant activities;
- development of general cultural competence among schoolchildren;
- developing the ability to make informed decisions and choices;
- awareness of one’s place in society;
- knowledge of oneself, one’s motives, aspirations, inclinations;
- formation of readiness for personal self-determination.
The main goal pursued by “Conversations about Important Things” is the development of civic and patriotic feelings among students. During classes, schoolchildren are taught about moral values, which later become the subject of discussion. These include:
- historical memory;
- the continuity of generations;
- patriotism – love for the Motherland;
- kindness, good deeds;
- family and family values;
- Russian culture;
- science in the service of the Motherland.
Topics of “Conversations about what matters” in 2023–2024
In the current academic year, it is planned to conduct 36 classes as part of “Conversations about Important Things.” The topics of all lessons have already been published.
Is it necessary to attend “Conversations about Important Things”?
“Talking about important things” is an extracurricular activity and is therefore not graded. However, visiting them is mandatory. According to Art. 43 of the federal law “On Education in the Russian Federation”, schoolchildren are required to attend lessons provided for by the curriculum. The need to attend extracurricular activities is enshrined in the letter of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation “On extracurricular activities and the implementation of additional general education programs.” Missing “Conversations about Important Things” without a good reason is regarded as absenteeism.
