Tahiti Pro: Johanne Defay and Vahine Fierro in repechages

Teahupoo finally reconnected with the history of women’s pro surfing this Tuesday following the start, after five days off, of the Tahiti Pro, 10th round of the pro circuit. The surfers of the Tour have finally soaked their fins for the first competition for 16 years, the last time for them dating back to 2006. And for this great comeback, the party did not however beat full swing, it was rather a warm-up lap while the swell should suddenly increase in the next few hours.
After having postponed the call for the first time from 6:30 a.m. to noon, the first series was launched at 12:35 p.m. (12:35 a.m. Wednesday morning in Metropolitan France) on a Teahupoo spot swept by a fine rain and rippled by small waves of around 1 m – 1.2m. Not the big breakout but the priority was elsewhere. Of the twelve surfers in the running, two French women: the wildcard, and local of the spot, Vahine Fierro as well as Johanne Defay, the current world number 2.
Duel Defay – Fierro for a place in the quarters
The two Blues have both taken 2nd place in their series of three and will therefore have to go through the repechage round to try to clinch a place in the quarter-finals. Coincidence of the table, the two tricolors must precisely face each other in round 2, a special heat which has at least the advantage of securing a Frenchwoman in the quarters.
Despite his wildcard status, Fierro will start as the favorite against a Defay who has always scored at least in the quarterfinals during the first nine rounds of the season. The surfer from Huanine could well stop this magnificent series because she masters the spot better than the Reunionese, with limited experience in the Havae pass.
During her slow series, where few waves arrived – only 8 in all were surfed in thirty minutes – Defay was dominated by Caroline Marks (9.50) after a 3.50 and a 2.70 (total of 6.20), Tyler Wright taking 3rd place (3.80).

In the previous heat, Fierro suffered the law of Carissa Moore without qualms. The Polynesian, who admitted to us having small butterflies in her stomach before her series, found a nice tube (6.90) but she lacked a good back up (4.83, wave with two maneuvers) to shake the Hawaiian ((13.84 against 11.73 for Fierro), especially since the good vibes were relatively rare.

“ The conditions were still good in my series, it was the only onetold us Vahine Fierro on the media boat a few minutes after his series. I had three hits, including a beautiful one, but I didn’t manage my priority well. I missed a tube to pass. In the next round, I’m really going to see them pay attention to my priority. When you face the best (Moore), it’s really you and the ocean. Johanne is a great competitor. For me it will not change anything, we will just have to surf well to qualify. »
If, due to the average conditions, this first day focused more on the maneuvers than the tubes, the following days should allow to appreciate big barrels, because, according to forecasts, beautiful and big waves are announced from Wednesday to Friday with a long-awaited peak swell on Thursday. For fans of Métropole, you will have to stay up late.
