Swiss scientists develop edible drone to save lives

Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne have developed a drone that contains an edible material. The development is designed to save people’s lives in an emergency – food will help those in trouble wait for rescuers, informs IEEE Spectrum.
The unusual UAV has wings made from pressed rice flour, shaped into cells like honeycombs, glued together with gelatin. The edible items are packaged in a film that should protect the valuable part of the drone during the flight.
Scientists believe that such a drone will be able to deliver food to people in a difficult situation, who cannot be evacuated immediately. The developers noted that their drone is disposable – after eating the wings, it will no longer be able to return to the sender, but these are small costs for the opportunity to save lives, scientists are convinced.
At the moment, researchers are improving the design of the UAV, trying to make more edible parts and equip the drone with a water tank.
