The Swiss prosecutor’s office closed the criminal case against the President of the International Football Federation (FIFA) Gianni Infantino, in which he was accused of inciting abuse of power, violating official secrets and obstructing the investigation, reports Associated Press.
FIFA said it was not surprised by the decision of the Swiss prosecutor’s office. Mr. Infantino, quoted by the AP with reference to the organization’s press service, said that this is an unconditional victory for him, for the new FIFA and for justice.
The investigation began in July 2020. Prosecutors were investigating three alleged secret meetings in 2016 and 2017 between Gianni Infantino and former Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber. He led investigations into FIFA between 2015 and 2019 and resigned in 2020 after being suspected of involvement in the scandal.
According to investigators, during secret meetings Mr. Infantino sought information about investigations into FIFA and its former executives with the intention of influencing the course of these investigations.
In 2022, Swiss federal prosecutors Hans Maurer and Ulrich Weder began to conduct the case against the FIFA president. In January 2023 they interrogated FIFA President.
