Swimmers from Russia and China took part in the relay race “Towards the Sun around Moneron Island”

The international relay race “Towards the Sun around Moneron Island” took place on Sakhalin on September 26. The swim was dedicated to the 210th anniversary of the birth of the maritime explorer of the Far East Gennady Nevelsky and the 170th anniversary of the founding of Korsakov. 20 swimmers from Russia and China took part in the event. The composition of the Russian team was formed from representatives of Korsakov and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the press service of the regional Ministry of Sports reported.
The relay included a 20-mile swim around Moneron at the junction of the La Perouse Strait and the Strait of Tartary.
The Russian and Chinese teams were divided into two groups of equal strength. The first, under the leadership of Svetlana Kositsina, included Alexander Rusakov, Ivan Volkov, Ivan Sinko, Denis Lyandin, Dmitry Skuridin, Eduard Orlov and Valentina Ostashova.
The second group was led by Alexander Brylin. It included Nikolai Krivega, Alexander Klepikov, Vitaly Shatura, Evgeniy Baibakov, Marina Kharicheva, Zheng Sun, Shen Dong, Irina Molchanova, Oksana Fedorova and Antonina Zhukovskaya.
The finish of the international relay race took place in Chuprov Bay. The distance that the athletes swam around Moneron was 48.3 km. They managed to do this in 8 hours and 11 minutes.
The organizers plan to repeat the swim around the island, but in the opposite direction, and also hold a relay race on Paramushir through the third Kuril Strait.
