The burning of the Koran in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm was condemned by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. According to him, it is unacceptable to justify such actions by freedom of speech.
Kristersson noted that it “is a fundamental value of democracy”, but “what is legal is not necessarily appropriate.”
The Prime Minister of Sweden called the burning of sacred books “an act of deep disrespect” and expressed “sympathy for all Muslims offended by what happened in Stockholm.”

On January 21, supporters of the far-right Hard Course party held a rally in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm, during which the Koran was publicly burned. One of the organizers of the action was the right-wing Swedish politician Rasmus Paludan.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry accused Sweden of violating the obligations taken by the country to join NATO – Ankara linked the action with the activities of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party. In Istanbul, in response, the demonstrators burned the flag of Sweden at the Consulate General of the country.
