As “MK” found out, some time ago, to the children’s hospital No. Speransky was urgently hospitalized with a small patient Ivan (name changed) with a foreign body in the esophagus. The parents said that for the past month, on the recommendation of doctors, they had treated their son for laryngitis, but the child still did not recover. An x-ray examination showed that little Vanya had a completely different problem: doctors found a round metal object in the upper esophagus. Moreover, the foreign body had already grown into the wall of the esophagus: it was bordered by its own mucous tissue. According to experts, the baby passed with a coin inside the body for more than one month – it is already difficult to establish a more accurate period.
It was difficult to capture an object that had already entered the wall of the esophagus. The doctors decided to remove the coin in a non-traumatic way. Using an optical instrument called an esophagoscope, the surgeons captured, tampered with, and removed the foreign body. The coin was in denomination of one ruble.
After removal, an abscess was immediately opened at its location – a purulent inflammation of the tissues.
Vanya had to spend some time on a ventilator in the intensive care unit where he was helped to cope with a large swelling of the esophagus and laryngopharynx after a complex procedure. Then he was transferred to a regular ward and prescribed therapy.
After 12 days, the baby was discharged home. In a month, he will need to return to the clinic for doctors to perform a visual examination of the esophageal mucosa. This is necessary to exclude the presence of scars, defects in the muscular membrane of the esophageal wall.
Experts recommend that parents of children under 5 years of age use the arm’s length rule. It is at this maximum distance from adults that a small child should be located so that parents can notice and prevent a dangerous situation.
