Surgeons at the Vidnovskaya Clinical Hospital freed their four-year-old patient from a rare pathology. For the little amphibian man, doctors cut out the gill arch with which he was born.
As MK learned, the young ichthyander underwent dozens of various examinations and surprised many medical luminaries – it turned out that he suffers from a rare anomaly, which occurs in only one baby out of two million. The only treatment tactic for this pathology is surgery. After a thorough consultation, the doctors decided to rid the boy of the “extra detail of evolution” at a tender age, so that it would not begin to interfere with him during the process of growth. Imagine the surprise of the surgeons when they found another surprise inside the tumor.
— When opening the gill primordium, an arched bone structure was discovered. This is a very rare anomaly – a rudiment of the branchial arch,” said Victoria Zhironkina, head of pediatric surgery at the Vidnovskaya Clinical Hospital. — During embryonic development, the gill slits close. But when they are not closed, a gill fistula is formed. If the latter is closed on both sides, a cyst occurs. In the walls of congenital cysts, muscle fibers, particles of cartilage, lobules of mucous glands and, extremely rarely, a rudiment of a branchial arch in the form of bone can be detected.
It is noteworthy that the human embryo actually has gill apparatus at the beginning of the second month of pregnancy. Over time, the first three pairs of gill arches of the embryo begin to participate in the formation of the tongue. The external auditory duct is formed from the first gill slit, and the tympanic membrane is formed from the first gill membrane.
After the removal of the excess growth, the boy feels great.
