On Sunday, a meeting of the initiative group to nominate former FSB officer, ex-Minister of Defense of the Donetsk People’s Republic Igor Girkin (also known as Igor Strelkov) for the presidency of Russia was held at the Izmailovo hotel complex in Moscow. According to the organizers, by the time of voting, over 550 people had registered for the event, and all of them unanimously supported the nomination of Mr. Girkin as a candidate in the 2024 presidential elections.

Moreover, all procedures were completed in the absence of a notary, although notarization of the registration protocol of members of the initiative group and the minutes of the meeting itself is mandatory and is provided for in Part 5 of Art. 34 of the federal law “On the elections of the President of the Russian Federation”. “Four notaries who agreed to come today refused at the last moment,” explained Mikhail Polynkov, a member of the unregistered “Russian Strelkov Movement”, who had previously widely announced the meeting of the initiative group on the Internet, on social networks. According to him, the organizers intend to carry out the necessary notarial procedures on Monday.

Let us recall that Igor Girkin, whom the District Court of The Hague in November 2022 found guilty of the crash of a Malaysian Boeing 777 passenger airliner over the Donbass in July 2014 and sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment, has been under arrest in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center since July 2023. He is accused of publicly calling for extremist activities in connection with some posts on social networks. Mr. Girkin categorically denies all accusations.
