Superjob: a quarter of employers check applicants’ credit histories

Every fourth employer surveyed by the Superjob service checks the credit histories of applicants for vacancies, TASS writes with reference to the survey result.
The service interviewed 1 thousand employers and 1.6 thousand representatives of the economically active population from all districts of Russia.
It turned out that every fourth employer checks the credit histories of applicants. At the same time, 17% of employers do this when selecting employees for any position, and 9% – for individual positions.
Most often, employers are interested in the credit histories of applicants for managerial positions, as well as for positions related to the material responsibility of the employee and with the conclusion of contracts and the organization of supplies, the study notes.
The survey also found that businesses began to check the credit histories of candidates more often compared to 2019 – then 15% of companies did this.
Interestingly, a survey of applicants showed that only one in ten of them faced a request for a credit history check.
Director of legal practice SuperJob Alexander Yuzhalin explained that the employer cannot just get information about the credit history, because it is confidential. To obtain such information, the applicant must either send a request to the credit bureau himself, or give the employer written consent to this. In the absence of such permission, the employer will not be able to obtain the relevant information.
At the same time, as Yuzhalin emphasized, “even having a credit history in hand, the employer cannot, based on it, refuse employment.” Such a refusal, as the specialist explained, should be motivated only by the business qualities of the candidate, and credit history does not fall into this category. This refusal can be challenged in court.
