In 2022, the majority of foreign software developers left the Russian market, which became a serious incentive for the growth of demand for domestic products. One of those who managed to turn the situation to their advantage was the company “New Cloud Technologies” (NOT), the developer of “MyOffice” (the Russian analogue of the Microsoft Office suite of office programs) – its revenue increased 4 times in 2022 alone. In 2022, the co-founder of the company, Dmitry Komissarov, left the post of CEO of NOT: while retaining the position of director of product development, he simultaneously took up other projects. One of them was the Strigo Capital venture fund, aimed at supporting IT startups. He spoke about investment plans and his vision of the prospects for the domestic IT market in an interview with Vedomosti.

– What do you think is the state of the Russian software market and where can it end up in five years?

– The departure of foreign companies has opened up quite a few new niches, thanks to which the sales volume of Russian software developers has doubled. It seems to me that in the next 3–5 years there is an opportunity to grow another 2 times. Let’s also not forget that the IT market is, in principle, growing due to the penetration of technology in general. Therefore, I would say that the Russian software market will grow by a third due to its organic development and by two thirds due to the departure of foreigners.

– And at the peak of this development, can we expect a bubble effect, when at some point the market does not live up to growth expectations?

– Single soap bubbles, of course, will arise – that’s how the economy works. But if we look at key systems, for example ERP (enterprise resource planning system – Vedomosti) and finance, they are a stuffed animal or a carcass, but we will replace everything foreign over time. I think that the most difficult thing for import substitution is PLM (product life cycle management system – Vedomosti) and automated process control systems (automated process control system – Vedomosti), where we lag far behind foreign players. On the other hand, Russia has a good engineering school. I don’t see any big soap bubbles in IT now. They are more likely to be expected in the field of microelectronics, because there is a gap between domestic and foreign developments.
