Study: Vegetarians may be more likely to be depressed

Scientists at Brazil’s Unisinos Center found that vegetarians are twice as likely to experience depressive episodes compared to people who eat meat. Article published in the scientific publication Journal of Affective Disorders.
The study included 14,216 Brazilians aged 35 to 74. A survey conducted by scientists showed the relationship between diet and a tendency to depression. So, researchers found that vegetarians experience depressive episodes twice as often as meat eaters.
However, the authors of the study are in no hurry to link dietary intake with mental problems. In order to accurately confirm or refute such a theory, long-term careful observations of the participants in the experiment are needed.
However, the work of Brazilian scientists echoes many other experiments that have explored the relationship between vegetarianism and depression. For example, scientists from France examined not only the preferences of the participants in their experiment, but also the products that were included in their diet.
So, it turned out that vegans and vegetarians who did not eat legumes were more likely to experience the effects of mental disorders.
