Students of Smolensk State University became participants in sports programming competitions in Voronezh

From April 26 to April 29, Voronezh hosted the All-Russian competition in sports programming among students. The event was timed to coincide with the celebration of the International Internet Day.

Sports programming is a type of competition where participants are asked to solve a number of problems, for which they need to write code. Competitions in sports programming can be held both in person and remotely.

Note that Russia is the first country in the world where this discipline is recognized as a sport.

More than 300 representatives of 32 leading universities of the country, from Khanty-Mansiysk to Kaliningrad, fought for victory in the competition in Voronezh. The Smolensk region was represented by the team of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Smolensk State University.

An assistant at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Informatics of the Smolensk State University shared his impressions of the trip Vladislav KOVALEV:

– It was the first official all-Russian competition among students in sports programming, and, as far as I know, all regions were invited to it. The organizer was Sports Programming Federation.

As the mentor noted, the participants of the Olympiad were students of the second and third courses of the directions “Applied Mathematics and Informatics” and “Applied Informatics in Logistics”.

There were two types of competitions at the event itself. Motorin Ilya, Soldatenkov Dmitry and Grashchenkov Nikita competed for the victory in the direction “Algorithmic programming”. The guys already had experience of traveling to various Olympiads. And in product programming (hackathon) Danil Kavchenkov, Dmitry Pyatyshev and Ivan Stefanenko spoke.

The Smolensk team was generally satisfied with the level of the event, but noted some inconsistency in the schedules. Among the shortcomings, Vladislav Kovalev singled out the refusal of the organizers to provide technical assistance, although the software installed on the computers did not work correctly.

“Our students really liked the very spirit of the competition. It was very interesting for the guys to compete with such universities as ITMO, MISIS, Moscow State University, Innopolis. It is certainly a great experience! By the way, the work of the Smolensk student Danil Kavchenkov was separately noted, – the mentor emphasized.

However, this time the Smolensk team failed to win prizes.

– The trip showed that, unfortunately, the Smolensk region is not yet ready to compete in competitions of this level. We have young guys who want to do sports programming, but at the moment there is no coach who could supervise this work on a regular basis. If we do not start developing sports programming, there is no point in going to such competitions,” Vladislav Kovalev believes.

Now the Federation of Sports Programming is gaining momentum in its activities. The leaders want to completely replace the previous ICPC championship. Therefore, they plan to cooperate with all regions and raise sports programming to a new level.

– The Federation can provide resources, materials, train a teacher so that he can become an official sports coach. I would like to get into such a team in order to train not only students, but also schoolchildren in the future, – the teacher of Smolensk State University shared his plans.

In addition, among the many achievements of a young man, one can single out victory in the regional competition “Teach IT”. The teacher became a laureate in the nomination “Development and testing” with the project “iOS, Android or cross-platform, the basics of Dart”.
